Even though it had been over two weeks since his meeting with Piotr, Kamil was still dizzy as if coming down from a bad high. He couldnât find his way around. At work, Robert quickly realized that Kamil was unnaturally ratty and unable to focus on anything.
âDude, whatâs up? Are you OK? he asked. âHow about you take some time off?â he offered.
âIâm fine,â Kamil grunted. âIâm just overworked.â
He was already tired and completely cranky from checking his mailbox three times a day and constantly listening for his phone to ring. The record by Urszula called Malinowy Król was worn from being constantly played, and the adapter was red hot every night. Previously, he used to change the needle in the adapter every three months, now, heâs done it three times over the past two days. The record was the only thing that reminded him of the man, without whom he could no longer imagine his future. Sometimes he would get so wound up that he imagined possible scenarios of Piotrâs phone calls,
I will keep totally cool and indifferent, as if nothing had happened between us, Kamil lied to himself. What an arse, how could he just leave me like this? he thought.
Ever since he met up with Piotr, he quit his volleyball practice telling his teammates that he had an arm injury. He would never forgive himself if Piotr called during his absence. Before going to bed he would have five or six beers or half a bottle of wine.
At last, on the 11th of February, while Kamil was watching the evening news, someone loudly knocked on his door.
âWho is it?â asked Kamil. There was only one thought in his head, that it must be a message from Piotr. He opened the door so violently that he frightened the postman.
âI have a registered letter to Mr. Adamski.â
Kamil literally ripped the letter out of the postmanâs hands, quickly signed the receipt and handed him a 20-zloty coin.
His hands were sweaty and shaking when he opened the letter. Finally, he began to read:
